Dear Friends,
Thank you for your support of the World Press Freedom Day Campaign in support of Hong Kong journalist, media publisher, activist and writer, Jimmy Lai. While WPFD is over, the campaign will continue to run over the coming days, and we continue to encourage PEN members across the globe to write messages of support on the campaign page. I would like to share my special thanks to ICPC for their translation of the campaign and for sharing his writing:
In the weeks that follow, the submission form will continue to exist on English PEN’s PENWrites campaign page, and we will explore other advocacy opportunities in the weeks ahead.
With Jimmy Lai’s National Security Law due to take place in September, the coming months are crucial in developing a public consciousness around Jimmy Lai’s unjust detention, which is illustrative of the growing threats to free expression in Hong Kong and across the world.

People say that (writers) are pretty powerless: we don’t have an army, we don’t have a bureaucracy. But if that were true, then why would writers be arrested?... Because the spoken word is powerful.
